Al Wathba Desert Resort Review: A Luxury Escape in Abu Dhabi’s Desert

An Arabian retreat

Just 45 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, Al Wathba feels like a completely different world. Surrounded by desert in every direction, this is the kind of place you choose when your goal isn’t sightseeing or shopping, but simply slowing down. Peace, privacy, and relaxation are the main attractions here.

Why Stay Here?

Arrival and Rooms

From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that the resort takes heavy inspiration from traditional Arabian architecture. Courtyards, archways, earthy colours, and carefully landscaped grounds create an atmosphere that feels authentic without becoming overly themed.

The entire property is beautifully maintained and has a strong sense of place. Rather than feeling like a generic luxury resort that could be anywhere in the world, Al Wathba feels distinctly Emirati.

Personally, I had the opportunity to stay in one of the resort’s suites featuring a private garden, plunge pool and outdoor jacuzzi, and it was easily one of the highlights of the stay.

The suite itself was spacious, clean, and quiet. Despite the size of the resort, I never experienced any noise disturbance, making it easy to fully switch off and relax. The bathroom felt appropriately luxurious, with a beautiful marble bathtub serving as its centrepiece.

What I appreciated most, however, was the private outdoor space. The jacuzzi was a fantastic addition, and the staff were happy to adjust the water temperature on request, making it comfortable to use at any time of day.

Comfort & Amenities

    • Private garden suites with outdoor jacuzzis and plunge pool offering a surprising level of privacy.
    • Well-equipped bathrooms featuring separate bathtubs, rain showers, and premium amenities.
    • Traditional Arabian design throughout the property creates a strong sense of place.
Sleepability

  • Exceptionally quiet surroundings thanks to the resort’s remote desert location.
  • Private outdoor areas remain peaceful even during the evening hours.
  • Comfortable bedding and effective climate control make it easy to maintain a restful room temperature.

Dining

The resort offers several dining venues, giving guests enough variety that it’s easy to spend a few days here without feeling the need to leave the property. Options range from Bait Al Hanine, the resort’s all-day dining restaurant serving Arabian and international cuisine, to Terra Secca, an Italian restaurant with a pleasant terrace overlooking the desert. There’s also Al Mesayan, a rooftop lounge that’s particularly popular around sunset, as well as Panache, the poolside restaurant and swim-up bar.

While I didn’t have the chance to try every restaurant during my stay, I was extremely impressed by the breakfast offering.

In fact, it ranks among the best hotel breakfasts I’ve experienced anywhere. The selection was extensive without feeling excessive, and what stood out most was the quality. There was a particularly strong focus on Arabic and Middle Eastern dishes, many of which felt freshly prepared and far more authentic than what you’ll typically find at international luxury hotels.

It’s easy to find luxury hotels that offer huge breakfast buffets. It’s much harder to find one where the food actually feels memorable.

Facilities and Experience

One of the resort’s biggest strengths is the quality of its facilities. The main swimming pool is enormous, offering plenty of space even when the hotel is busy. Surrounded by traditional Arabian architecture and desert views, it’s the kind of pool area where it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon without feeling the need to do anything else.

The fitness centre is equally impressive, with more equipment than you’ll find in many hotel gyms.

I can highly recommend the spa, which features two saunas, a jacuzzi, and a cooling room. Complimentary access is included for all guests (excluding treatments), and it offers a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.

For guests looking for something more active, the resort offers a surprisingly wide range of activities. Options include guided desert walks, dune driving experiences, camel rides, and even surfing on an artificial wave. Whether you want to relax or stay active, there’s enough here to fill several days without ever leaving the property.

Summary and Rates

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Al Wathba and can easily see myself returning in the future. The combination of beautiful Arabian-inspired design, excellent facilities, a relaxing spa, outstanding breakfast, and a genuinely peaceful desert setting makes it stand out from many other luxury resorts in the UAE.

This isn’t the place to stay if you want to spend your days exploring Abu Dhabi. But if you’re looking for a few days of relaxation, desert scenery, and a slower pace of life, Al Wathba is an easy recommendation.

One of the things I appreciated most is that the resort never feels like it’s trying too hard. There’s no headline-grabbing attraction or gimmick. Instead, it focuses on doing the basics exceptionally well: comfortable rooms, excellent facilities, good food, and an atmosphere that’s genuinely relaxing.

If your idea of a perfect getaway is spending a few days switching off, enjoying the desert, and leaving feeling recharged, Al Wathba delivers exactly that.

One caveat worth knowing

The resort’s remote location is also its biggest drawback.

Getting here without a rental car can be surprisingly inconvenient. During my stay, services such as Uber and Careem were not readily available in the area. If you plan to leave the resort, it’s worth arranging transportation in advance or coordinating directly with a local taxi driver.

For most guests this won’t be a major issue, since the resort is designed to be a destination in itself, but it’s something worth knowing before you arrive.
